What to expect on your first session

Where to stand, what to wear, who to look for, and why nobody will ask you why you came.

Self Invested Men · 1 October 2026 · 3 minute read

Turning up the first time is the hardest bit. Here is exactly what happens, so there are no surprises.

Before you go

Wear whatever you would wear to walk the dog. Trainers are fine for everything except the hill walk, where proper shoes help. Bring water. That is it.

When you arrive

Get there five or ten minutes early. Look for the leader, they will be the one with the clipboard they never actually use. Tell them it is your first time. They will introduce you to someone and make sure you are not stood on your own.

During the session

Go at your own pace. On runs there is always a walking group at the back, and somebody always stays with the last man. Nobody goes round the room and nobody will ask why you came.

Afterwards

Most sessions end with a brew. Stay if you like, go if you would rather. Either is fine.

Most men who feel nervous on week one are still here at week ten.

A single sheet to fill in: what helps, who to call, and what to do on a bad day. Print it, stick it on the fridge.
